My connection to the Froude Avenue Community Centre began at a very young age. I was involved in its programs as a child, and by my early teens, I had started working there during the summer months as a camp counsellor. Froude wasn’t just a place I went to—it became a second home.

In 2016, I received the Fry Family Foundation Junior Scholarship. The next year, I graduated from Holy Heart of Mary High School (2017). Knowing that there was financial support behind me gave me the confidence to continue my education. I began with two semesters at the College of the North Atlantic (CNA) in the Comprehensive Arts and Science Transition Program to upgrade my high school marks. The following year, I enrolled in the Personal Care Attendant/Home Support Worker Program, also at CNA, and graduated with honours in 2019.

I worked as a Personal Care Attendant at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital for two years. However, after sustaining a back injury, I had to reconsider my career path. That’s when I turned back to what had always grounded me—Froude Avenue Community Centre.

I began by helping with the afterschool program and gradually took on more responsibilities. Today, I work as the Office  Administration/ Programs and Services Support Worker.  I manage the front desk, handle administrative duties, and support a wide range of programs including our seniors programs, summer camps, homework support, and more.

The Fry Family Foundation Scholarship gave me the flexibility to explore my career options without the weight of financial pressure. It allowed me to grow, gain new skills, and ultimately find my way back to a place that has always meant so much to me. Now, I have the privilege of supporting the next generation—helping today’s youth access the same kind of opportunities and encouragement I was lucky to receive. The Fry Family Foundation believed in me before I fully believed in myself—and that made all the difference.

I am forever grateful for the support of the Fry Family Foundation, and I am proud to be part of its story.

Emily
