Khatereh Bahmanpour
Fry Family Foundation Graduate Leadership Award, 2022-23
A Journey in Which There Is No End

As an educator with nearly a decade of experience and a background in Physics, Mathematics, and English Language and Literature, I came to Canada four years ago to pursue a second master’s degree in Education at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador; a journey that led to profound personal and professional reflection and academic exploration and reshaped my identity as an educator. Guided by Dr. Dorothy Vaandering, I conducted an autoethnographic study of my life experiences to understand how my past and my transition as a newcomer shaped my decision to continue my career in education in a new country. This work culminated in 'The Personal Quest of a Teacher Grappling with the Question of Identity.'

Prior to my master’s degree in Education, I earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Physics, followed by a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature, all in my home country, Iran. These academic and professional experiences continue to shape my commitment to education as a means of fostering understanding, resilience, and growth, and as a tool to empower both learners and educators to overcome challenges and achieve their potential.

Over the past four years, I have integrated my personal growth into my professional practice through engagement in professional learning, conferences, teaching development programs, and, most importantly, community service. I have supported undergraduate international students at MUN and assisted newcomer adults and children through the Association for New Canadians, serving as both a volunteer interpreter/translator and an ESL instructor. I continue to teach evening ESL classes to newcomer adults under the auspices of ANC. Currently, I work with NL Schools as an EAL/LEARN teacher, supporting newcomer students with diverse learning experiences. I also serve as a board member of TEAL NL, contributing to the growth and advancement of English language education in the province. These roles have enabled me to support newcomer learners navigating challenges I once faced myself, while also helping me build a second home where I truly belong.

To me, receiving the Fry Family Foundation Leadership Award, the MUN Chancellor’s Award, the Faculty of Education Dean’s Graduate Award, and the esteemed title of Fellow of the School of Graduate Studies was more than a collection of recognitions; it was an acknowledgment of resilience, perseverance, growth, professional commitment, and leadership that profoundly shaped both my academic and professional life.
