Women in Science and Engineering, Newfoundland & Labrador
Founded in 1988, Women in Science and Engineering Newfoundland and Labrador (WISE NL), is a non-profit, incorporated volunteer organization active in Newfoundland and Labrador. WISE NL encourages women throughout the province to consider the broad range of career choices in science and engineering. WISE NL works to increase the participation of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers by increasing awareness that these professions are valuable, rewarding and exciting options for women. Intergenerational and interdisciplinary, WISE NL also provides mentoring, professional development and networking opportunities to facilitate the continued participation and success of women in these fields, and advocates for equitable workplaces. In 2025, Fry Family Foundation provided financial support to the Summer Student Employment Program (SSEP).
Final Presentation Day - SSEP
On August 18, 2025 WISE NL held its Final Presentation Day for 24 SSEP students. This marked 35 years of promoting Science and Engineering to Young Women. These inspiring high school students are from 9 different communities in NL, including St. John's, Torbay, Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove, Conception Bay South, Whitbourne, Glovertown, Grand Falls-Windsor, Springdale and Pollards Point. Many sponsors, supervisors and family members were present at the event. Erin Burt, FFF Trustee and WISE NL Director of Mentorship, spoke on behalf of all donors and also reflected on her transformative experience as an SSEP participant in 2017.
