Fry Family Foundation Community Centre Alliance Post-Secondary Scholarships are now renewable for up to three additional years, as long as the student remains in scholarship standing. Spotlight - The Chancellor's Awards/Fry Family Foundation Leadership Awards

Dr. Amrita Ghosh is the recipient of the Chancellor's Graduate Award and the Fry Family Foundation Graduate Leadership Award. Amrita completed her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (hons.) at the Institute of Agriculture, Visva Bharati University, India and her Master’s degree in Agricultural Biotechnology at CSK Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University, India. Amrita moved to Canada in 2014 to pursue her PhD in Biology at MUN and this was recently completed under the supervision of Dr. Samir C. Debnath at St. John’s Research and Development Centre, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Amrita's innovative research in Dr. Debnath's lab opens new possibilities for achieving better crop performance using modern molecular techniques. Her research has contributed significantly to in vitro and molecular approaches for propagation and germplasm improvement of blueberries. This technique represents an important innovation that can lead to the commercialization of its outcomes and contribute to enriching and diversifying the NL economy. Throughout her PhD years Amrita has been involved with several non-profit organizations in Canada and India, and volunteered with various community groups. She was also the winner of the 2019 Grace Hiscock Hollett Scholarship (commemorating the Canadian Federation of University Women 100th Anniversary) as well as the Jacqueline Sheppard and Randell Pardy innovation award for two consecutive years (2019-2020).

Mehnaz Tabassum is the recipient of the Chancellor's Undergraduate Award and the Fry Family Foundation Undergraduate Leadership Award. Mehnaz is a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Business Administration program with a Certificate in Public Policy. She has a passion for community work and providing mentorship. She is also a council member for both the St. John’s Food Policy Council and the Premier’s Youth Council. Mehnaz has a strong finance and management background from her work experience with various government and non-profit sectors. She is currently employed as a Senior Projects Officer with the Canada Revenue Agency. Mehnaz is also the Director of Operations for a rapidly growing non-profit NL Eats Community Outreach Inc. Mehnaz is well-known for her exemplary leadership skills. She has led many youth based entrepreneurial projects, and received recognition for her commitments through various awards & scholarships. Her recent accomplishments are receiving the ‘Woman of Distinction’ award by YWCA St. John’s & being nominated as ‘Woman of Inspiration’ by Universal Women’s Network. Announcing a New Award: The School of Music Dean's Scholarship
We are excited to partner with one of Canada's leading music schools to offer a prestigious new entrance scholarship. Andrew Dunphy is the first recipient of the Fry Family Foundation School of Music Dean's Scholarship.
Andrew is a first year student at Memorial University School of Music and graduated with honours from Bayview Academy in St. Georges. Andrew has been passionate about music, particularly guitar playing, throughout his high school career. He credits the support of his high school community and opportunities to study music through CDLI (distant learning), in influencing his decision to pursue music at the post secondary level. Andrew is a recipient of the Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award and is nearing completion of the Gold Award requirements. He holds a Blackbelt in Taekwondo and is a National Certified Lifeguard and Swim Safety Instructor. He continues to work at the Aquatic Center in Stephenville while attending university virtually this Fall. Andrew plans to complete his undergraduate degree and pursue a career in music.

Spotlight: Ralph Vincent Memorial Business Scholarship Recipient
Noah Dollimount is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce program at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Noah is a graduate of Queen Elizabeth Regional High School in Conception Bay South. In high school he attended Model United Nations during his final year and he also participated in two Blundon Math Seminars at MUN in grades 11 and 12. Upon graduation from MUN he intends upon writing and passing the exams needed to become an Actuary.
Spotlight: Charlotte Penwell Dolimount Memorial Scholarship
Colin Rose is a first year student at Memorial University's Faculty of Business Administration and graduated with honours from John Burke High School in Grand Bank. He has won numerous teaching awards at school and has excelled at mathematics. He has also won multiple gold medals with his minor hockey team as the Assistant Captain. He continues to take part in a regular weight training regime while attending MUN virtually this Fall. Colin has been interested in business his whole life and credits this interest to his parents. He plans to complete the Bachelor of Commerce (Co-operative) program and pursue a career in accounting. |
Spotlight: J.M.C. Facey Engineering Scholarship
Liam Watts is a first-year student at Memorial University currently studying engineering. Liam has a passion for problem-solving and wishes to make a difference in the world through engineering. He graduated with honours from Mealy Mountain Collegiate in Goose Bay, where he is also the class valedictorian of 2020. Outside of his academics, Liam is the squadron commander of his local air cadet squadron and is an independent math tutor. During his virtual studies this semester, he works a part-time job at his local pet store, where he is a cashier. After completing his Bachelor of Engineering, Liam plans to pursue a career in the field of mechanical engineering, and possibly one day he will start his own company. |
