The 2021-22 academic year marks the 25th year of granting scholarships to Memorial University by Darryl and Marlene Fry. The Chancellor's Awards/Fry Family Foundation Leadership Awards

Dr. Valerie Webber is the recipient of the Chancellor's Graduate Award and the Fry Family Foundation Graduate Leadership Award. Valerie has just completed their PhD in Community Health and Humanities at MUN under the supervision of Dr. Fern Brunger. Their research combines sexual health and social justice, focusing on the interplay between health, sexuality, and hierarchies of respectability. Their dissertation, Epistemic Injustice & Public Health: The Case of Occupational Health in Porn Production, examined community organizing and sexual health protocols in the adult film industry. Valerie has been involved in a variety of sex worker rights, community health, and queer organizing projects—most recently, working with Safe Harbour Outreach Project to develop and administer a COVID-19 relief fund for sex workers. They currently serve as board chair of Performer Availability Screening Services (PASS), a non-profit dedicated to adult film performer health. Previously, Valerie completed a BA (Hons.) in Anthropology and Sexuality Studies at Concordia University, a Master’s of Arts in Medical Anthropology at McGill University, and a Master’s of Public Health at Memorial University. They are a recipient of a Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Scholarship and the Dr. Sharon Buehler Community Health & Humanities Convocation Award. Dr. Webber has joined the SHaG Lab at Dalhousie University as a Postdoctoral Fellow. Read how Dr. Webber was attracted to MUN Medicine's variety of health perspectives in The Obvious Choice.

John Mweemba is the recipient of the Chancellor's Undergraduate Award and the Fry Family Foundation Undergraduate Leadership Award. John is a graduate of the Bachelor of Arts program with a double major in Political Science and Law & Society with a Certificate in Public Policy. John is a dedicated young activist who was making a name for himself as an anti-racism advocate before becoming the Human Rights advocate that he is today. After the tragic death of George Floyd in 2020, John became Founder and President of the Black Students' Association at MUN. After John served as President of the BSA MUN, he was elected as the MUN Students Union Director of Advocacy 2021/22, where he advocated for students at the administrative level and in the community. John remains dedicated to his human rights journey as he continues to serve on the Association for New Canadians Black Voice Collective and the NL Human Rights Commission as a Justice Community Facilitator. At the national level John was appointed as the first Chairperson/President from the Atlantic provinces of the Canadian Federation of Students National Black Caucus, where he led numerous Black Student movements across a plethora of Canadian Universities. John had the great honour of being named as the 2021 NL Human Rights Award Winner, and the 2021 David Kirkland Leadership Award Recipient during his last year of studies. Announcing: Three New Dean's Leadership Awards
We are pleased to announce three new Dean's Leadership Awards for the Faculties of Business, Education and Engineering. These awards were established to encourage students to become tomorrow's great leaders. The awards will be granted to an undergraduate student in their final year of study who demonstrates outstanding leadership throughout the course of their program, through academic work, professional work placements (if applicable), and community involvement.
Dean's Leadership Award in Business
William Hickey is the inaugural recipient of the FFF Dean’s Leadership Award in the Faculty of Business Administration. As an involved member of the student community, he leads Memorial’s student-managed investment team “The Fund” as Portfolio Manager. William is also an acting member of the Student Council for his graduating class and previously served as Social Chair during his time in residence. Additionally, William assisted in conducting research within the business faculty as a Research Assistant. Throughout his Bachelor of Commerce (Co-op) program, William completed three work terms in Financial Statement Audit and ran his own service business. Outside of school and work, William is involved in the St. John’s community as a volunteer mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters and was an alternate captain in the St. John’s Junior Hockey League. As William completes his undergraduate degree, he intends to continue his education by pursuing a professional designation. William also hopes to apply the knowledge and leadership skills he has developed throughout his time at Memorial as he transitions into his career.
Dean's Leadership Award in Engineering
Erin Maher is the inaugural recipient of the FFF Dean’s Leadership Award in Engineering. An active member of the local and national engineering student community throughout her studies, she has held roles such as the Vice President Academic on MUN Engineering Student Society and the Atlantic Representative on the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students Advocacy Working Group. In her final year of studies, Erin was excited to co-chair the Canadian Engineering Leadership Conference, providing new opportunities for MUN Engineering students to develop their leadership skills. Outside of school, Erin is an avid member of the figure skating community, volunteering as a Skate Canada official and competing with her synchronized skating team, the Mount-Pearl Paradise Open Starlites. Now completed her Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering program, Erin hopes to utilize the advocacy and leadership skills she has developed throughout her first degree and plans to pursue a legal education in the fall. Dean's Leadership Award in Education
Clarinetist Andrew George is the inaugural recipient of the FFF Dean's Leadership Award in Education. Andrew has found a home in Atlantic Canada’s music scene since 2013. Performing in many various roles like Principal Clarinet in Symphony New Brunswick, woodwind doubler in musical theatre and jazz band pits, and as a member of his chamber ensemble of clarinet and strings, Port City 5, Andrew is happily exploring the limitless facets of New Brunswick’s lively music world. As an educator, he has worked as clarinet sectional coach, woodwind coach, orchestra librarian, and arranger for both the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra and the Saint John Youth Orchestra, and has been the resident Clarinet Teaching Artist for Sistema New Brunswick’s Saint John Centre since his arrival in the province. With his studies in music education at Memorial University now complete, he is excited to seek out new opportunities to continue to shape and support the next generation of musicians and music lovers.
Two recipients for the Charlotte Penwell Dolimount Memorial Scholarship
We are pleased to announce that there are two recipients for this year's Charlotte Penwell Dolimount Memorial Scholarship. In a unique circumstance, both Payton Peach and Robyn Knickle graduated with honours from John Burke High School in Grand Bank and tied on every requirement for the award!

Payton Peach is a first year student at MUN’s Faculty of Science. She has been interested in science throughout her entire life and hopes to major in behavioural neuroscience and focus in psychiatry. Maintaining good mental health is important to Payton and she wants to be there for her patients one day. She is also a science tutor and enjoys getting lots of exercise.
Robyn Knickle is a first year student at The Center For Nursing Studies studying a Bachelors of Nursing. She has been involved in many extracurricular activities. Robyn has always had a high respect for nurses and had a desire to be one when she grew up. She plans to complete a bachelors degree in nursing, enjoy working in the paediatric field and return to medical school to become a paediatric surgeon. |
Ralph Vincent Memorial Business Scholarship
Nathan Young is the recipient of the FFF Ralph Vincent Memorial Business Scholarship. Nathan is currently a second-year student in the Faculty of Business at Memorial University, pursuing a joint degree of Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts (Economics). He serves as Sector Manager for Memorial’s student-led investment fund, The Fund. Nathan is an avid curler, having skipped Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2022 Tim Horton’s Brier and having led Team Canada as Skip at the 2020 Youth Olympic Games in Switzerland, where he captured a Gold Medal in the mixed doubles competition. Nathan is actively involved in the community, acting as a member of the Premier’s Youth Council, City of St. John’s Youth Advisory Committee, ex-officio Board Member and Family Curling Program volunteer with the St. John’s Curling Club, and as member of Curling Canada’s For the Love of Curling scholarship selection panel. Nathan’s post-graduation vision is to pursue a career in Asset/Portfolio Management. Read more about Nathan in The business of balance.
Clarice Diamond Fry Memorial Scholarship
Madison Feltham is the recipient of the FFF Clarice Diamond Fry Memorial Scholarship. Madison is a first year MUN student doing general studies with plans of pursuing Kinesiology. She graduated from Glovertown Academy with honours. Madison is very passionate about sports, during her high school career she was actively involved in multiple sports, such as volleyball in which she was team captain. Aside from athletics, she spent five years of high school tutoring children. In addition to receiving several Humanitarian Awards, she also earned a Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and is currently finishing her Silver. Madison has hopes to pursue a career that will help others become the best versions of themselves – which she continues to strive to be herself.
J.M.C. Facey Engineering Scholarship

Ayman Islam was presented with the FFF J.M.C. Facey Engineering Scholarship at the MUN Engineering and Applied Science Fall 2021 Awards Ceremony. Ayman graduated from Gonzaga High School in St. John’s and is a first year MUN student currently studying engineering. Ayman excels in the areas of mathematics and physics. He has spent two summers working with the Newfoundland based tech company Verafin, and wishes to pursue a career in electrical engineering. Outside of school, Ayman loves to play sports. He has been playing provincial level soccer since the age of 13, and played on his high school soccer, basketball, and rugby teams.

Hugh J. Anderson Chemistry Scholarship
Victoria White is the recipient of the FFF Hugh J. Anderson Chemistry Scholarship. Victoria is a second-year MUN student currently completing a Chemistry (Biological) degree, with the goal of attending Medical School. She graduated from Gander Collegiate with honours and was valedictorian of the class of 2020. Outside of academics, she enjoys going to the gym, playing team sports, and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. Chemistry has always interested Victoria, with her main passion now being research. This past summer she received a Student Undergraduate Research Award and worked with Dr. Reza Tabrizchi and Eric Mensah doing cardiovascular research. Victoria is planning to further her research experience this summer.
School of Music Dean's Scholarship
Elizaveta Konstantinova is the recipient of the FFF School of Music Dean's Scholarship. Liza is a first year student at the MUN School of Music, and graduated from St. Bonaventure's College in St. John's with President's Honours. She has been involved in music for the majority of her life, starting with piano as a 4 year old, then moving to voice, clarinet, and saxophone in later years. She was involved in her school's band program, and performed with them in the Kiwanis and Rotary Music Festivals, along with travelling to Europe with the group several times. Liza has been a member of Calos Youth Orchestra's Senior Orchestra and Shallaway Youth Choir, played with the Rotary Music Festival All Star Jazz Band, and has been invited to perform with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra in the clarinet section several times. As a soloist, Liza has won the Kiwanis Music Festival St. John's Junior Instrumental Rose Bowl (2019), Senior Rose Bowl (2020), was invited to the NL Provincial Music Festival (2021), where she won the woodwind category and is taking part in this year's National Music Festival. Liza was the recipient of the Debut Atlantic Award for Musical Excellence in 2021. Liza plans to pursue a career as a professional musician.
