The 2034-24 Award season at Memorial University began this year with the Community Centre Alliance. Other scholarship ceremonies were held at the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Faculty of Business Administration and Gushue Hall. In person events are always a great time to connect with scholarship recipients and FFF Alumni.

The Chancellor's Awards/Fry Family Foundation Leadership Awards
|
Christie Costello is the recipient of the Chancellor's Graduate Award and the Fry Family Foundation Graduate Leadership Award. Christie is a graduate of the Doctor of Philosophy program in the Faculty of Medicine (Human Genetics and Genomics Program) under the supervision of Dr. Guangju Zhai and Dr. Ed Randell. She was also the recipient of the designation Fellow of the School of Graduate Studies for outstanding academic achievement throughout her graduate program. Her doctoral thesis explored predictors of outcomes for osteoarthritis patients undergoing total joint replacement, specifically genetic and biochemical biomarkers and epidemiological factors. Christie is now a two-time graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland, having previously completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biochemistry. Throughout her graduate program, Christie was a leader in many student societies, including the Human Genetics Student Society, of which she was the president for four years, and the Medical Graduate Students' Society. She participated in a number of conferences both locally, nationally, and internationally, and published four first-author papers during her PhD. Her most recent paper, published in Rheumatology (Oxford) in May 2023, was named to Arthritis Society Canada's Top 10 Research Advances of 2023. Christie also volunteered actively within her community, especially with the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre's Crisis Line. Currently, Christie is completing her third year of the Doctor of Medicine program at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Katherine Dibbon is the recipient of the Chancellor’s Undergraduate Award and the Fry Family Foundation Undergraduate Leadership Award. Katherine graduated with a joint bachelor of arts in political science and a bachelor of science in chemistry. During her time at Memorial, Katherine assisted new students in their transition to university while working with the Student Experience Office. She mentored students through her involvement with Women in Science and Engineering Undergraduate Society, the Transforming our Horizons Scholarship Committee, the Faculty of Science Faculty Committee and the Department of Chemistry Research Labs. Katherine was also an Ambassador for Memorial as the Government Advocacy Specialist for World Vision Canada’s National Youth Council; Team Lead for Communications and social media for the International Younger Chemists Network; and Canadian representative on UN Women’s Generation Equality Youth Task Force. Katherine was Co-Chair of the Premier’s Youth Council and Co-Chair of the City of St. John’s Youth Advisory Committee. She also represented Memorial through the Fulbright Killam Fellowship, the Amgen Scholars Program and the International Younger Chemists Network. Ralph Vincent Memorial Business Scholarship

Alexis Burry is the recipient of the Ralph Vincent Memorial Scholarship. Alexis is a second-year student in Memorial University's Bachelor of Commerce (Co-op) Program. In 2022, she graduated from Queen Elizabeth Regional High School in Conception Bay South with honors and a French Immersion certificate. Alexis was named to the Dean’s List in the Faculty of Business Administration for the 2022-2023 academic year and has previously obtained other scholarships including the Ron Joyce Foundation Scholarship, and the Transforming Our Horizons entrance scholarship. She has completed the bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh Award, which has numerous other volunteer tasks. Alexis plans to pursue a career in business with a focus in accounting and a goal of obtaining her CPA designation.

Hugh J. Anderson Chemistry Scholarship
Robyn Grandy is the recipient of the Hugh J. Anderson Chemistry Scholarship. Robyn is a third-year student currently completing a Bachelor of Science with a major in Chemistry and minor in Biochemistry. Her goal upon completion of this degree is to attend Medical School. Robyn graduated from Marystown Central High School with honours and was the valedictorian of the class of 2021. Her hometown is Garnish, located on the Burin Peninsula of Newfoundland. She became particularly interested in Chemistry in high school and knew it was a subject that she wanted to pursue further. Outside of school, Robyn enjoys reading, painting, and going for walks. She has also received the Memorial University of Newfoundland Endowment Fund Scholarship 2021-22, Dr. Howard Louise White Memorial Award in Chemistry 2022-23, the Dr. June G. Winter Memorial Scholarship 2022-23, the Dean of Science Book Prize (Chemistry) 2022-23, and has been named to the Faculty of Science Dean’s List for two years of study. Robyn hopes to soon declare her degree as an honours degree and gain more research experience.
JMC Facey Engineering Scholarship

Sarah Ryan is the recipient of the JMC Facey Engineering Scholarship. She is a first-year student at Memorial University, currently studying engineering. Sarah grew up in Paradise, NL and graduated with honours from Holy Spirit High School in Conception Bay South. Throughout her time in high school, Sarah was involved in a student leadership homeroom and spent much of her spare time tutoring students in her school community in various subjects and assisting with the planning and delivery of many school events. Sarah is currently settling into her university routine and when she isn’t studying, she enjoys spending time reading, shopping, or in the company of friends and family. Sarah was also the recipient of a Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science High Achiever Entrance Scholarship and the Irving Oil Limited Scholarship.

Clarice Diamond Fry Memorial Scholarship
RayLynne Yetman is the 2023-24 recipient of the Clarice Diamond Fry Memorial Scholarship. RayLynne is a first year Science student at Memorial University of Newfoundland who plans to apply for the MUN Nursing Program. She is a graduate of Glovertown Academy where she was involved in the student council and graduation committee. RayLynne spent a lot of time at the library, as an avid reader and volunteering there as well. She grew up in Glovertown where she was in the Cadets program for many years and attended marksmanship competitions with her team.
Charlotte Penwell Dolimount Memorial Scholarship
Nicole Collins is the 2023-24 recipient of the Charlotte Penwell Dolimount Memorial Scholarship. Nicole graduated with honours at John Burke High School in Grand Bank. In her spare time she was involved in many extracurricular activities and tutored students in both math and science. Nicole is now a first year student at Memorial University pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree with a goal of applying to the Faculty of Medicine. Nicole would love to have a career in medical research to help make differences in peoples overall health.
School of Music Dean's Scholarship
Aleksandar Cupkovic is the recipient of the FFF School of Music Dean’s Scholarship for the 2023-24 scholarship year. Aleksandar graduated from Gonzaga High School in June 2023. His musical career started at the age of nine with piano lessons. He was quickly hooked and soon went on to play in the Kiwanis music festival, and to take yearly examinations from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Around this time he also began to participate in school ensembles, such as jazz, concert, and student showcase bands throughout junior high school and high school. Aleksandar has received multiple first place awards in the Kiwanis Music Festival, most recently in the Junior 17 Concert Group for piano, and was also the Junior Instrumental Rose Bowl Runner-Up. He is also the keyboardist in a small band called Road De Luxe. Outside of the piano, Aleksander also has proficiency in mallet percussion, bass, drums, and trombone. He says, "I want to pursue music as I believe that it brings out emotions and feelings that can't be described, and has the incredible power to help others through many difficult situations. I hope that one day I can do the same for someone else with my music that the music of others has done for me, and I believe the award will help me achieve such a goal." such a goal.
Dean's Leadership Award in Education
Sarah Kirby is the recipient of the FFF Dean’s Leadership Award in Education. Born and raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Sarah learned from her grandparents about the importance of giving back to the community. Sarah is completing her Bachelor of Education (Intermediate/Secondary) degree and will become a high school social studies teacher in the province next year.
Sarah's journey toward leadership began when her Grade 11 math teacher introduced her to the Canadian charity LiveDifferent, where she discovered her passion for making a difference. This experience inspired her to volunteer in various countries, building homes, schools, and community centers, and working with youth to develop their leadership skills.
In addition to her international volunteer work, Sarah has been actively involved in her local community, most recently with the Association for New Canadians, where she volunteered to teach English and Canadian life skills to former refugee families. Her commitment to mentorship and teaching led her to pursue a career in education, where she aims to inspire and empower students to become future leaders. Sarah's approach to leadership is characterized by integrity and leading by example, which she imparts to her students during her internship.
Her dedication to doing the right thing and her belief in the importance of leadership have made a positive impact on those around her. Through this scholarship, she is determined to continue her mission of making a meaningful difference in the world.

Dean's Leadership Award in Business

Sarah Moore is the recipient of the FFF Dean’s Leadership Award in the Faculty of Business Administration. Sarah is in the final year of her Bachelor of Commerce Honours Co-Operative degree with a minor in Psychology. Diverse work-term experiences allowed Sarah to gain experience across various business areas, including marketing, business development, economic development, research, and events planning. A winter semester at Memorial University’s Harlow campus in England was transformative for Sarah and sparked an interest in entrepreneurship and international business. On campus, Sarah is an active member of the student community. As a Co-President of Enactus Memorial, Sarah has led the development of several projects that promote youth entrepreneurship, uplift underserved communities, and advocate for economic and environmental sustainability. Sarah also sits on the 59th Annual Memorial Business Day committee, and has supported on-campus initiatives that promote women in business. Off-campus, Sarah has been recognized with citizenship & volunteer awards from her community, and was presented with the St. John Ambulance Humanitarian Service Medallion. As she nears graduation, Sarah is excited to apply her leadership skills to future opportunities in her career and community.

Dean's Leadership Award in Engineering

Holly Clarke is the recipient of the FFF Dean's Leadership Award in Engineering. Holly is a Process Engineering Student (class of ’24) and has been working to support the future engineering community since her first year. In 2020, Holly co-founded Robogals Memorial University, a student group designed to help create a safe space for everyone in STEM fields by engaging, inspiring, and empowering the next generation of engineers and technologists. As Co-President of Robogals, Holly has developed curriculums for and ran over 20 workshops in elementary schools across Newfoundland and organized three yearly community events for children of all ages to explore STEM. In addition to Robogals, Holly was elected the junior and then senior VP External for the MUN Engineering Student Society ‘A’ where she represented MUN engineering students on a regional and national level. In her over three years on the engineering society, Holly helped run events to better the university experience of her fellow engineering students. In 2022 Holly was elected by engineering students across Atlantic Canada to represent them as Atlantic Ambassador on the board of directors of the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students (CFES) for the 2023-2024 academic year. As Atlantic Ambassador, Holly oversees and votes on all decisions made by the CFES to ensure that they are in the best interests of engineering students across the nine Atlantic universities.
