College of the North Atlantic
James Sellars Apprenticeship Awards

Fry Family Foundation CNA Scholarship Program

In 2011, Fry Family Foundation further enhanced its award program with College of the North Atlantic by offering an Apprenticeship Award Initiative. The James Sellars Apprenticeship Awards were awarded annually to three Welder students and three Construction/Industrial Electrician students..It was established to honour the memory of James Sellars, father of Marlene (Sellars) Fry, who was the first plumber in Newfoundland to receive his Master Plumber License. Read about the Inaugural Presentation of the James Sellars Apprenticeship Award.  Pictured here at that 2011 presentation are Doug Burt, grandson of James Sellars; recipients Welder student Justin Croft and Construction/Industrial Electrician student Mitch Morgan; and Frank Fry.

The scholarship program at CNA was revised again in 2020 to better reflect the Foundation's emphasis on Leadership and Community Engagement. The James Sellars Apprenticeship Award is now offered to a student in each of the Construction/ Industrial Electrician, Welder, Plumber, Carpenter, Cabinet Maker and Welder/Metal Fabricator programs. Granting of the award is based on academic excellence, leadership and community/college involvement. If possible, it will be equally distributed to male and female students.

From 2011 to 2022, a total of 433 Fry Family Foundation scholarships were granted to CNA students, with 64 of those students receiving this Apprenticeship Award. Read about Sheila Coultas, 2013 recipient of the James Sellars Apprenticeship Award.
