Echo Pond Environmental Education Centre (EPEEC)
Echo Pond Environmental Education Centre is a residential outdoor school dedicated to helping students learn about the environment. It is located in a tranquil, wilderness setting on the Avalon Peninsula. Nestled on a 12 acre site in the old growth boreal forest of Deer Park, Salmonier, EPEEC encompasses several habitat types which are home to a wide variety of wildlife. Designed to help students become more aware of their environment and to enhance personal and social responsibility for environmental action, EPEEC is the ideal setting for outdoor education.

Green Energy in Action
EPEEC's focus is on climate and environmental education. FFF supports their Green Energy in Action goal to produce zero greenhouse gas emissions. EPEEC enlisted the help of MUN Engineering Work Term Student Garnet Edinger to install new energy components to reach that goal. Garnet worked under the direction of Don Spencer, mechanical engineer and volunteer. He helped design and project manage the installation of alternative energy systems including windmills, solar panels and a solar-powered water heater, He also assisted with the construction of a drying room and outdoor shower facility. This was made possible through the MUN Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering's Community Service Learning Work Term Program. FFF is a supporter of this initiative and other infrastructure initiatives at the Centre. |

Youth Leadership Project
Beginning in 2022, FFF supported a Youth Leadership development program to create meaningful and authentic leadership opportunities for youth and young adults age 15-29 in EPEEC's school program and summer camp. Between April and October, the Education Director and Camp Director provided training, mentorship and hands-on experience in outdoor environmental leadership to 33 young adults and teens. Most of these leaders have been campers for many years and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to take their Echo Pond experience to the next level. This pool of new talent are excited to share Echo Pond with the next generation of campers at EPEEC in 2023 and beyond. EPEEC Student Subsidization Fund
FFF provides financial support to low-income students and immigrant youth to pay the fee that covers tuition, meals and transportation required to attend the Centre’s programs. This is in addition to the Foundation's Environmental Education Fund established with the Community Centre Alliance (CCA) in St. John’s, that enables their youth members to attend EPEEC programming. FFF also supports inclusion by providing funding to purchase quality rain ponchos for student campers. |
