My biggest memory from this award was the gathering that was hosted while we were still in high school. This was a lot of fun but also gave us a chance to see the residences and start to become familiar with the Memorial University campus. It really boosted my confidence to arrive on my first day as a student and feel like I already had friends at school! It was also enriching to have connections in so many disciplines in the university. Throughout my 5 years at Memorial, I often encountered other Horizons students as many of us became very active in student life.
I used my scholarship from the Foundation to buy my first laptop. As an engineering student, this was a very important tool to facilitate my independent learning and help me stay on top of my studies. This laptop served me throughout my entire five-year bachelor degree and when I moved to Denmark to pursue my master's degree, that same laptop was still by my side! I studied in Denmark and the Netherlands for my master's, now I am living and working in Norway for a developer as a wind energy engineer.
This photo is from that first Horizons gathering when we were in high school. I am the one in the wheelchair (due to an injury I sustained that summer), and despite my injury, I have fantastic memories from the weekend.
