Glovertown Area Adventure Biking Project
Commencing in 2022, Fry Family Foundation will offer support to the Glovertown Area Adventure Bike Program. The project will be split into two phases. The first phase involves the purchase of 11 Fatbikes and related accessories. This includes starting a winter bike program at Holy Cross School (HCS), Eastport which is an extension of the HCS Club which currently operates for students in the Spring and Fall. The focus for this portion will be Grade 7 to 12 and includes weekly rides, bike maintenance education and workshops. In addition, Fatbiking will be introduced to the Glovertown Bike Program which currently includes Sprockids (ages 5 to 11) and Adventure Bike Club (ages 11 to 15). Introducing a winter bike program will focus on a 6-to-8-week program for Junior High & High School youth (ages 13 to 17) and will mirror the current bike programs by offering weekly rides and special events. This program would be offered in conjunction with the Town of Glovertown Recreation Program. The second phase (2023 and beyond) will focus on broadening the reach of the biking program deeper into the communities of the Eastport Peninsula, targeting older youth and adults with a specific focus on increasing female participation. This will be enabled through the acquisition of a trailer for transporting the bikes. Learn more on the Adventure Biking Project website.

The Fatbikes finally arrived in December, 2022. The Eastport Mechanics group spent 3 days assembling them. The HCS Bike Club in Eastport have started riding with both students (and some adults). There is also an enthusiastic group that participate in the first Adult Fatbike Rides in Glovertown in the winter of 2023. The town of Glovertown Recreation group also launched a 'Try Fatbiking' program during its Winter Carnival.
In 2023, a focus was placed on building local leadership skills with the Sprockids and Adventure Biking Leaders program! These teens became the first group of leaders who graduated through our clubs, and this Spring will help lead the next generation of riders in Eastport and Glovertown. |
