Fry Family Foundation Community Service Learning Work Term Support, Faculty of Engineering & Applied Science, 2021
Gurzint Singh is a Mechanical Engineering student at MUN who completed a Fall 2021 Service-Learning Work Term placement with the Community Centre Alliance, based at Froude Avenue Community Centre. Fry Family Foundation provides funding for these work terms through our Youth in STEM partnership with Community Centre Alliance and MUN Engineering. Gurzint worked with the Centres by tutoring students in STEM subjects, creating STEM learning activities and assisting with upgrading computer equipment and creating 3D printing learning centres. He was also involved with promoting 3D printing to the students and getting them interested in future works in STEM. He developed an operating manual for the use of the 3D printer for the Community Centre staff to use in-house.
Gurzint is also a recent alumnus of Go Getters NL, a non-profit organization hosted by the community sector council and funded by the Canada Service Corps. This youth service initiative is intended to support youth ages 19-29 interested in appreciating the benefits and value of commitment to community participation through community service, civic engagement, advocacy, and volunteering. He now serves on the Board of Froude Avenue Community Centre.

Each Go Getter commits to completing a passion project. Gurzint had an idea for a community mural at Froude Avenue Community Centre. He wanted the design to reflect inclusivity and diversity, and he also wanted community residents to paint some of the mural. Go Getters NL commissioned Jordan, an artist who helped bring Gurzint’s idea to life. His idea was embraced by the Community Centre and he literally had all ages from the community, staff and supporters on the paint brushes! After months of planning and a few weeks of painting, this passion project was completed in May, 2022.

Gurzint explains the symbolism in the mural as follows: “The idea behind the pride-colored flower is to provide representation for members of that community. Once you stand in front of the mural, the flower is supposed to act like a "crown" and the trees help to outline wings. The wings symbolize uplift, so that whenever you are at the community center or are part of the community, you can be uplifted as this is a positive environment where you can receive help or help others. The words in the wings symbolize that all of them put together will uplift you. The flowers are made up of different countries' flags to showcase togetherness and representation. The flags from left to right: Newfoundland, Vietnam, Jamaica, Labrador, Ukraine, Egypt, Nigeria, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Somalia, Gabon and Italy”.
Funding was provided for this project by Rising Youth - Taking it Global. Overall, this beautiful mural is the result of a fabulous collaboration among many community partners.
