Fry Family Foundation Junior Leadership Award, 2006
The Fry Family Foundation Leadership Award introduced me to Memorial Leadership before I began at university. For the first time I felt like I found people who had similar personalities to me and who loved to get involved and volunteer as much as I did. I continued leadership activities and volunteer work through high school (some through the Horizons program) which helped me obtain Memorial’s Alumni Entrance Scholarship, an award that completely covered my tuition for my undergraduate degree.
I continued volunteering with Memorial leadership programs throughout my undergraduate degree and met some of my lifelong friends! After completing my undergraduate degree in chemistry and mathematics I went on to complete my master's degree in immunology and infectious diseases through Memorial's medical school. During my master's degree, I continued volunteering in leadership roles, for example as a representative of the Medical Graduate Student Society. My continued volunteering, in addition to my academics, helped me secure several awards to completely cover my master's degree as well.
After my master's degree I went on to complete my PhD at Harvard University in Biological and BioMedical Sciences. During my PhD I still continued my involvement in student leadership as the president of the Biomedical Graduate Student Organization. I helped plan, organize and facilitate various events for incoming and current PhD students at Harvard Medical School.
I am now working as a Business Development Director for Novadiscovery, a health-tech company based in Lyon, France. I was hired as their first Boston-based employee to help them get started in the US market.
Being awarded this scholarship at a young age encouraged me to keep up with my volunteering and leadership activities, and I have maintained this involvement through all of my time in academia. I truly believe the skills I use the most in my job (especially networking, giving high stakes presentations and being comfortable in large groups) are skills I started developing in my leadership activities, partially facilitated by the Horizons Award!
