Fry Family Foundation Junior Leadership Award, 2013
At the time of receiving the Fry Family Foundation Award I was an active Grade 9 student. Back then, I volunteered in any way I could to keep my rural school engaging for all students. I played a part in everything: sports teams, art clubs, music groups, student council, and often volunteered for tasks like hosting assemblies and organizing sports day for younger grades. I did all of this because I loved seeing the change I made in my school. Receiving the Horizons award validated my efforts and motivated me to give more to my community.
I went on to complete a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in psychology at Memorial University followed by a Master of Science in experimental psychology. From 2013 until 2020, I was an active member of the Psychology Society, I volunteered as a responder on the NL Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre support line, I organized self-care workshops for teen girls with the 'I Love Me' Campaign, and I held several mentorship roles where I supported exchange students and youth who immigrated to Canada.
After completing my master’s thesis, I accepted a position in the Clinical Psychology PhD program at Concordia University. Once I complete my research and clinical training, I will return to Newfoundland where I will build my clinical practice and further develop the Newfoundland and Labrador mental healthcare system through research, advocacy, and policy engagement.
Throughout my life I have accumulated more than $170,000 in scholarships, awards, and grants, but the Fry Family Foundation Junior Leadership Award was my first. Receiving this award validated my efforts and pushed me to work hard in academics and community engagement. It taught me that my efforts had value to those around me and that I had the power to improve my community. Thank you for this opportunity to reflect on my journey, and thank you for supporting young leaders like me.
