Student Leadership Initiative
It has been shown that students who began to understand the complexities of Leadership at an early stage in their university education were more likely to step forward to take a Leadership approach to their own personal and professional development. The Marine Institute (MI) will provide strategic opportunities for this to happen for their students through a commitment from the Fry Family Foundation in 2018 for 5 years. The initiative will consist of the following components. Read more in Fry Family Foundation Supports Student Leadership to New Heights.

- A Leadership Module in all programs of study in each of the Institutes’ three schools that ensure students have an opportunity to learn about leadership and reflect on their own leadership style through course content and experiential learning opportunities. It is directed at empowering students to develop leadership skills. MI Lead places emphasis on connecting participants with other MI students, the wider MI community, and the community at large. Participants acquire leadership skill by attending workshops, through personal reflection, service initiatives, networking and more. The four MI Lead learning and development pillars are: Technical, Applied, Influential and Reflective.Learn more about the 2020 launch of the MI Lead program.
- An online credit-based Certificate in Leadership Studies which utilizes existing and newly developed curriculum that will explore the many facets of leadership. The undergraduate Certificate in Leadership is a 24-credit hour program (15 core , 9 elective, and a pass / fail Capstone Leadership course) designed to positively transform an individual’s personal concept of leadership while developing as a better leader. Read the MI News Release about the 2021 launch and learn more about the Certificate in Leadership Studies. Applications for this program have been accepted since Fall 2021. The first graduate of this program will be in the Fall 2023 semester!
- A Service Learning Initiative will have an approach that embraces experiential learning for students, with a particular focus on giving back to the community. Through various initiatives throughout the year there will be opportunities for students to provide service to various non-profit community groups, including learning contracts, reflective learning agreements and a focus on learning from both the student and the non-profit community agency. In 2023, the MI Team are working toward implementing opportunities for MI Lead to influence and complement MI work terms with students creating active-learning leadership outreach. In addition, there is an opportunity for MI to connect with the Community Center Alliance and local community centers on various youth engagement activities to expand the knowledge that youth have on the various ocean-related programs and career options. The linkages are being piloted with the Froude Avenue Community Center and developed through facilitating connections to the current youth engagement activities and competitions, including the Model Boat Competition, Nautical Skills Competition and the MATE ROV Competition. MI Lead participants and work term students will provide support and mentorship for the teams.
- The Leader in Residence will inspire and motivate students with a different leader each year and have that leader become an active participant in our leadership initiatives. It is anticipated that this individual will attend in-class presentations, provide a keynote address to the Institute and its community members (internal and external) and provide service to the community.
