Fry Family Foundation Junior Leadership Award, 2010
I received the Fry Family’s Horizons Award as an entrance scholarship to Memorial University in 2010. When I received the award, I was unsure of what I wanted to do. All I knew is that I wanted to go to university, so receiving that award made all of my hard work trying to excel in student leadership and schoolwork pay off. As a first-generation post-secondary student, I did not realize back then how big a challenge that was as I do now.
Since then, I’ve had a long post-secondary career with many twists and turns. I completed my bachelor’s degree at Memorial with a major in Russian Literature and Language and a minor in Film Studies in 2016. I got to study in Russia twice! Now I’m entering the third year of my PhD in Cinema Studies at the University of Toronto, where I focus on a more personal context: Newfoundland and Labrador film and media.
Reflecting back, Horizons was the first major award that I ever received, giving me the confidence to apply myself as a student leader. I thrive most when I’m organizing a graduate conference or a film screening series. Most of all, I remember all of the friends I made through Horizons, who I am still friends with today and admire for their leadership in their communities.
