Award Spotlight: Graduate Leadership Award Recipient

Alessandra Gentile is the first recipient of the Fry Family Foundation Graduate Leadership Award. This award is granted to a graduate student who demonstrates outstanding leadership throughout the course of his/her Marine Institute studies, through academic work, professional work placements (if applicable), and community involvement.
Alessandra is a MSc in Fisheries Science (Stock Assessment) student whose thesis is focused on spatio-temporal modeling of the yellowtail flounder fishery. She leads with her core values including: compassion, inclusivity and being a team player to uplift her community. Outside of her studies, she is passionate about science outreach through her work with Pint of Science and sustainability through her position on the Signal Hill Campus Sustainability and Climate Action Group. She is continuously promoting ocean literacy which is exemplified by her work as an Ocean Bridge Youth Ambassador. As co-chair of The Marine Institute Graduate society, she acts as an advocate for her fellow graduate students. As a wellness enthusiast, she empowers young female athletes through coaching youth and varsity volleyball in St John’s. |

The Vice-President's Fry Family Foundation Excellence in Leadership Award is granted to the undergraduate student in the final semester of a three or four year program at the Marine Institute who has demonstrated outstanding leadership throughout the course of his/her Marine Institute studies.
