Community Partnerships - Newfoundland & Labrador
Salvation Army NL
In 2019, Fry Family Foundation made a funding commitment for 5 years to be directed toward the provision of Educational Services and infrastructure at the Salvation Army Ches Penney Centre of Hope. The Grand Opening was held on December 1, 2020. The project is a modern social services facility that was constructed and operated by the NL Division of the Salvation Army. It is located on the site of former Salvation Army community facilities on Springdale Street in downtown St. John’s. It provides housing, health services, addictions counselling, food programs, employment training and more to our most marginalized citizens from one central location. The impact of this new facility will be felt across the entire province. Read more about the Centre and its Grand Opening. Watch a short video about Jaime, a resident in one of the supportive housing units. Navigating the challenges of addiction recovery, Jaime shared how the Salvation Army has impacted her life and given her hope again. |

The curriculum for the Centre of Hope's Employment Training Programs are developed and delivered by College of the North Atlantic and take place in the Fry Family Learning Centre. These programs are available to individuals who are in receipt of income support and would like to enter or re-enter the workforce. The two employment programs which are offered every Calender year, are Retail Skills in January and Building Service Worker in September. Class sizes are small, with a maximum of 12 students. Each program consists of nine weeks in the classroom and three weeks on-the-job training. Students graduate with a Certificate of Achievement, as well as Certificates in WHMIS, Back Injury Prevention, and First Aid which are presented at graduation.

FFF also supports the Salvation Army's provision of Food Services and Emergency Response Services throughout the province. In 2021, a new Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) mobile unit was launched to provide practical assistance and emotional and spiritual care to the West Coast of NL. This is the third truck in the EDS fleet in NL. Take a virtual tour of the new EDS vehicle. Learn about the many programs available through the Salvation Army.

Fry Family Foundation has been proud to sponsor the Hope in the City Breakfast in 2022 and 2023. It is a wonderful start to the Christmas season while recognizing and celebrating the importance and impact of philanthropy in our community. We were delighted in 2022 to be joined by several community partners at this event. In 2023 we were joined by a group of FFF Scholarship recipients. Paul Burt spoke at the Breakfasts and presented a cheque to Major Jamie Locke of the Salvation Army on behalf of Fry Family Foundation.
In 2023, the Foundation also attended the inaugural Mug Up for Hope in support of the Salvation Army in Newfoundland & Labrador camping program. The camp aims to meet physical and mental health needs, as well as educational, social and recreational needs through a creative, safe and fun experience. The Mug Up for Hope was a great opportunity to raise funds to help children have the experience of a lifetime at Camp Starrigan. FFF provided funds to support the efforts of the Salvation Army to send kids to camp this summer. |
The Foundation is also proud to have supported the Salvation Army's Santa Shuffle for several years. Read more about this past project here.
