Fry Family Foundation Ralph Vincent Memorial Business Scholarship, 2019
In March 2020, a few days before the campus closed due to the oncoming COVID-19 pandemic, I was notified that I received the Ralph Vincent Memorial Scholarship. At the time, I was in the middle of my second year of the joint Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts degree program. Since I was just starting to get accustomed to the program, the course load was still difficult to manage, and it required a lot of focus and attention. Furthermore, the threat of the pandemic and the shift to remote learning created a very confusing and challenging situation for all students, myself included.
The Ralph Vincent Memorial Business Scholarship showed me that my hard work was not going unnoticed, and it provided me with a surge of confidence that I needed to not only complete that particular semester, but also continue on with my program. In a school that is filled with an abundance of people from different backgrounds, it is easy to feel insignificant or lost in the crowd. However, when you are given the opportunity to prove yourself and are rewarded for that effort, it can be the determinant for future success. As of right now, I have started my fourth year of studies in the same program, and I hope to eventually combine my knowledge in business and French to shape a career in Newfoundland and Labrador. I am still undecided on whether I would like to return to school after graduation and pursue education studies, but this scholarship has relieved some of the financial burdens that have restricted my options previously.
I would like to personally thank the Fry Family Foundation for offering this scholarship and providing individuals like me with the opportunity to grow as a student at Memorial University. Students can often feel like they are lumped together and labelled as a simple statistic, but I no longer feel like this applies to me. I am an individual who was recognized for my efforts, and I am extremely honoured to receive financial support in the form of this scholarship to fund the journey ahead.
