Community Centre Alliance
The Community Centre Alliance (CCA) is committed to assisting community members in their pursuit of obtaining post-secondary education. Since the partnership began in 2006, Fry Family Foundation has awarded over 300 annual scholarships to CCA youth living in their five partnering St. John's neighbourhoods (Froude Avenue, Buckmaster’s Circle, MacMorran, Rabbittown and Virginia Park). The program was enhanced in 2020 when post-secondary CCA scholarships became renewable for up to three additional years, as long as the student remained in scholarship standing. A thorough review of the CCA Scholarship program was completed in 2023 with the goal to build a long term, sustainable FFF ‘educational support’ program with the CCA. A plan is now in place for the 2024-25 scholarship season which sees Applications, Selection, Renewal and Financial Management conducted by the Post-Secondary Institutions..
There are now two new applications for CCA community members, one for those who plan to attend Memorial University and Marine Institute (Dr. Philip Warren Exceptional Achievement Award) and another for those planning to attend College of the North Atlantic (Bob Dawson Bursary). FFF supports the education and development of students, in particular those who have demonstrated leadership ability. Selection is based on academics, financial need, volunteerism, and participation in school and Community Centre activities. Eligible candidates must plan to enrol in full-time, first year studies in September at Memorial University, Marine Institute or College of the North Atlantic. Applications are accepted directly by the institutions and applicants should contact their Community Centre for assistance in completing the application. As part of our commitment to building better communities and our belief in education, the Foundation has been supporting Literacy Programs at the Community Centres since 2012. To expand that commitment further, the Foundation entered into a partnership with Memorial University's Co-operative Engineering Program in 2020 to promote a CCA Youth in STEM initiative that would help prepare youth for any future career path they choose.
