Award Spotlight: Graduate Student Leadership Award
Marina Carbonell is this year's recipient of the Fry Family Foundation Graduate Leadership Award. This is granted to a graduate student who demonstrates outstanding leadership throughout the course of his/her studies, through academic work, professional work placements (if applicable), and community involvement. Marina is a PhD Student in Maritime Studies (Public Safety) who has based their career on helping people who need help. Marina has worked as a police officer for years, as a leader with the Inshore Rescue Boat (IRB) Search and Rescue (SAR) program with the Canadian Coast Guard, and has volunteered with youth and parents, Marina defines leadership as "...instilling confidence in others, championing and supporting people, and inspiring others by example. A good leader does not need to be perfect; they must be honest and open while working collaboratively with others. The best leaders support the people around them; they see that we are all running our own race."
Award Spotlight: Vice President’s Excellence in Leadership Award
Andre Simoes Re is this year's recipient of the Vice-President's Fry Family Foundation Excellence in Leadership Award. It is granted to the undergraduate student in the final semester of a three or four year program at MI who has demonstrated outstanding leadership throughout the course of his/her studies.
Andre is a 4th year, Nautical Science student who believes, "Leadership can mean something different to everyone, but to me, leadership refers to the qualities or traits that allows one to effectively lead others. They are someone who fills the leadership role without ever having to be asked. They are placed into this role because to them it is important to have someone that truly believes in others and their abilities, but at the same time, will inspire others to grow by challenging them to accomplish tasks they would not have otherwise thought possible." Andre also received a FFF Undergraduate Leadership Award in 2020-21.

Award Spotlight: Undergraduate Leadership Awards
The Fry Family Foundation Leadership Awards are granted to up to four undergraduate students who demonstrate outstanding leadership throughout the course of their studies at MI, through academic work, professional work placements (if applicable), and community involvement.
Daisy Archibald is a 3rd year Marine Environmental Technology student. Daisy believes, "Leadership is giving a voice to those who don't have one and standing up for what you believe in. Strong leadership comes from having the ability to effectively communicate with and influence others to spark change for the better. Leadership is not always comfortable, for being a leader forces you to take steps out of your comfort zone, have difficult conversations and be vulnerable to backlash. But being a good leader is having the confidence in yourself to be able to take criticism and overcome objections and adversities." Daisy also received a FFF Undergraduate Leadership Award in 2021-22.
Julia Keeping is a 3rd year Marine Environmental Technology student. Julia believes, "Two leadership qualities that will be particularly important for the transition into the workforce will be communication and accountability. The environmental field often consists of working with not only the natural environment, but also directly with communities. Hard science is not always accessible; the ability to distill information in a way that is approachable to the general public, especially those who may be directly affected is incredibly important. Accountability is also crucial in the environmental field or any sector in general. The willingness to be responsible for one's actions to coworkers, the public, as well as the environment is necessary not only for career success, but also in being an ethical global citizen."
Kasun Perera is a 3rd year Ocean Mapping student. Kasun believes, "Being an open-minded person is another very important leadership quality that an ocean mapping professional must have. There will be professionals from different backgrounds within the organization and each one has their unique way of approaching a task. A good leader would put their ego behind and listen to the opinions of other group members as well. This will make the group members believe that they are actively contributing to the success of the organization. A Leader should get rid of the mind set of thinking 'I am always right'”.
Olivia Lymburner is a 3rd year Marine Environmental Technology student. Olivia believes, "Integrity is a leadership quality and it is important in all aspects of life, especially in my chosen career, Environmental Science. Integrity is the way a person lives their life. Every day we face decisions that only we can make. We control how we live our lives, and how we live them defines us. Integrity is defined as 'moral soundness, honesty, and freedom from corrupting influence'. I believe in the importance of accountability and loyalty to the work you are doing and the people you are sharing that with; being able to admit when you are wrong; and approaching challenges with courage." Olivia also received a FFF Undergraduate Leadership Award in 2021-22. Read more about Olivia in Aiming for a Healthy Planet.
