The Rooms: Christopher Pratt Art
A monetary donation to the Rooms Corporation from the Fry Family Foundation in 2019 enabled The Rooms to acquire Christopher Pratt’s painting, "Trongate Abstract, Art School Fire” for the provincial collection. The work depicts The Trongate, a part of Glasgow, Scotland that Pratt associates with his time as a student at the Glasgow School of Art, 1957-1959. Painted almost entirely from memory, this artwork was started just before a major fire on June 15, 2018, destroyed the Mackintosh Building - an iconic structure at the school. Pratt hints at this fire with a band of flame-coloured sky in the background of the painting, Pratt lived in Glasgow with fellow artist and then-wife Mary Pratt, who passed away the year the painting was made. On the back, Pratt has written: " In Memory of Mary (1935-2018)." Read more about The Rooms on their website.

On September 11, 2019 a public reception was held at The Rooms to celebrate the donation of this very special piece of Christopher Pratt's artwork by the Fry Family Foundation. It is one of the largest donations of single artwork to The Rooms. Pictured from left to right are Darryl Fry, Marlene Fry and Christopher Pratt. In January of 2019, both Christopher Pratt and Darryl Fry were awarded the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Christopher Pratt was one of the most respected and important artists in Canada. His art shared his deep reverence for, and lifelong dedication to, his home province of Newfoundland and Labrador. He was based in St. Mary's Bay and portrayed places that hold memories for him, with architectural sites as a constant subject. A key supporter of The Rooms, Pratt’s donations of sketches, drawings, prints and paintings comprise the largest single collection of his work in Canada.
