Where it all began - The Original 5 Scholarships
In 1996, Darryl Fry funded five new entrance scholarships at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He wanted his gift directed toward scholarships for three reasons: "First, I wanted to help some deserving students. Second, I wanted to recognize some of the individuals who inspired me over the years, and third, to contribute to the university that provided my wife [Marlene] and I with a window to the world. It was my mother's drive for education combined with my teacher's enthusiasm for math, along with two professors who showed students the practical benefits of math and chemistry, who inspired me to pick a career in chemical engineering which subsequently took me into the business world."
