Fry Family Foundation Junior Leadership Scholarship
Fry Family Foundation Junior Leadership Scholarship
This award was created in 2003 through a partnership with FFF and MUN to invest in developing student leaders who were on the ‘horizon’. All public schools in NL with a grade nine class were eligible to nominate one student. It was awarded annually to 50 Grade Nine students who wished to develop their community involvement and leadership ability and planned to enter into post-secondary studies at MUN.
Those selected received an initial award of $200 and were entered into MUN's HORIZONS Program. These students joined other award winners and were given the opportunity to participate in extensive leadership development training throughout their high school careers. This included a leadership development weekend, a service-learning program, and in Grade 12, students received a special invitation to MUN’s LEAP event to ease the transition into university life. Upon their entrance to MUN, students were awarded an additional $1000 scholarship and offered the opportunity to participate in experiential placements on campus.
Recognition and opportunity were the essential elements obtained through the HORIZONS program. The fundamental goal was the fostering of youth leadership competencies in NL. At the time, it was the province’s largest leadership development scholarship program and the only program of its kind in North America. FFF established this award as a 10-year pilot program and during that time, 315 of these students went on to receive their $1000 FFF scholarship at MUN. In 2013 the program was adopted by Johnson Insurance and became the HORIZONS Scholarship and Leadership Program. The award is currently under review by MUN.
